Absinthe Buyers Guide

Take this journey into the decadent realm of Absinthe to discover the Green Fairy. Includes the Absinthe guide, historical information and the Absinthe FAQ.

Absinthe??

Can someone explain what exactly Absinthe is to me? I mean, I know its a really strong drink that apparently fucks you up but could someone further explain this mysterious drink? What are its effects? Is it like other alcohols? Where is it sold? Thank you! Ahaha, well that sounds kickass. Thank you for answering!
Answer: Absinthe is an anise flavored alcoholic drink that is also flavored with wormwood, fennel, and a variety of other herbs. This is how it's been traditionally (or originally depending on how you look at it) and has, despite the myth and hype, NEVER had hallucinogenic properties. Part of the hype is that thujone is a hallucinogen. False. Second, there isn't (nor ever was) sufficient quantities of it to cause one to hallucinate even if it were. Although small in quantity, there are still bottles from the 19th century available...the original formula and all. They've been painstakingly analyzed and proven to contain far, FAR less thujone than previously claimed. In fact, the results of that study was published in April. Any claims to the contrary have never been substantiated in a laboratory (and further proven false by the study). If you want to read the study, you can get your booze geek on here: http://www.wormwoodsociety.org/media/SystematicMisinformation.pdf The problem with getting to the bottom of what Absinthe really is involves getting past all the erroneous myth (like its hallucinogenic properties or being an aphrodisiac) as well as the current marketing bunk such as "highest thujone" and "full effects." Not to mention, those who are cashing in on the mystique and myth would not benefit from the consumers knowing better so they work really hard at trying to perpetuate it as well as discredit those who disagree. It's a vicious cycle driven by money (as was the push for its ban in the first place). Truth be told, common culinary herbs contain higher levels of thujone than wormwood (the defining ingredient that makes Absinthe "Absinthe") such as sage and tarragon. You don't hear about people tripping and hallucinating from turkey stuffing, right? On the other hand, Absinthe does impart a slightly different kind of intoxication. Typically it's described as a more coherent or "lucid" type of drunk, not feeling sloppy or fuzzy like other liquors can make one feel. This is where the brand name "Lucid" originated (the first brand to legally hit US shelves in May of '07). Little by little, genuine Absinthes (made both in Europe and in the US) are hitting US shelves. Just about any decent sized liquor store will have it in most states (a couple are still laging behind). You can also order online, but imports are expensive (more for shipping than for the booze itself) and US sellers cannot ship to a number of states (their website will tell you which) so it can be tricky depending on where you live. As much as it vexes me for people to blindly copy and paste from Wikipedia, their entry for Absinthe is actually a really well researched one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

absinthe??

Has anyone on here tried it? How is it, and is it all its rumored to be?Ex. hallucinagenic, etc.....
Answer: Yes, I've drunk Absinthe several times. The last time was in November at at tasting of several different brands of Absinthe in London, where it was never banned. My favorite was Pernod 68 Absinthe is an aniseed flavoured spirit that is clear until water is added to it, when it turns milky. Absinthe contains a number of herbs and spices, but the one that got it that reputation - most likely unfairly - is wormwood. Wormwood has an ingredient called thujone which has a structure similar to T.H.C. which is the active chemical in cannabis. There is a tiny amount of wormwood - used for its bitter flavours - in Absinthe, and you'd have to drink an enormous amount of it to be affected. Bear in mind that Absinthe has a very high alcohol content, around 70% alcohol (normal spirits are 40%), but that it is drunk with 6 -8 times as much water, thus diluting the alcohol and active ingredients. However, it was made illegal in France and some other countries because of fear that people were made mad by Absinthe. The stories about the effect of the wormwood content were over exagerated. But there was tremendous consumption of Absinthe in France and people certainly drank too much. What does it do? Same as any other spirit. It makes you drunk if you have too much of it. Does it make you high? Well, it didn't affect me. I think you'd have to drink so much of it that you'd be drunk from its high alcohol content first Does it still have wormwood in it? Yes of course. Bear in mind it wasn't made illegal in all countries and even though France made Absinthe illegal and thus Pernod made a wormwood free replacement drink known as Pastis, Pernod continued to make real Absinthe for export. I'm not a lawyer but the Absinthe merchants say that it is only illegal to SELL Absinthe in the US, but legal to buy and consume it, and so companies like eAbsinthe.com ship personal orders to the US and guarantee refund if a consignment is lost or seized. However, if you want to know what Absinthe is like without buying it, go to any bar or pub and ask for a glass of Pernod or Ricard pastis. Pastis is the wormwood free replacement produced after Absinthe was made illegal. These also have lower alcohol, so you add less water. The taste and look of pastis is the same as Absinthe. This online merchant that will ship Absinthe to US customers from the UK - see http://www.eAbsinthe.com

How much does Absinthe cost and is it easy to find?

Has anyone tried the alcohlic drink Absinthe? It just became legal in the United States. I was wondering if it was worth all the hype. I really want to try it for myself but I want to make sure it is worth it and doesnt cost too much. Of course I have yet to see it anywhere in Michigan yet.
Answer: You should be able to find it all over Michigan by now. The ban was repealed in May. The average cost is $40 to $60 a bottle, but I saw a cheap brand in Binny's on Monday for $29.99. I would look for Lucid if I was going to buy it myself. This brand was designed by the leading expert on Absinthe (who's name I can't remember right now) and is made to the same standards of classic Absinthe. Just to be clear on the subject, there is no and has never been any hallucinogenic effect to Absinthe. This was a smear campaign by the French wine industry in the late 1800's when Absinthe nearly put them out of business. It was picked up on by the temperance movement here in the US shortly after resulting in the ban. I'll look up his name and update the posting if I can fnd it. EDIT: Here you go... Ted (T.A.) Breaux. Watched an interview with him on the History Channel a while back. Seemed like he knew what her was talking about.

Whats the difference between absinthe in America and absinthe in other countries?

I know we sell it in bars here, but I thought "real" Absinthe was illegal in the states. Anyone know what the difference is?
Answer: Modern Absinthe has as much as Thujone as Absinthe before it was banned. Drinking Absinthe will not make you see a Green Fairy no matter how much your idiot friend will try to convince you otherwise. I think anyone who spends a lot of money on a horrible Absinthe from Czechoslovakia that claims to have the highest concentration thujone all while giving no regard to its foul taste will see something just because they want to. Most of these Absinthes are marketed for people who want that experience that everyone talks about. This experience is nothing more than rumor, lore, and misinformation. That said you'll find that Absinthe is quite different from any other liquor you'll find. Enjoy it for what it is, liquor. People were known to hallucinate off of old school Absinthe because often times, the Absinthe was produced in the home and all sorts of chemicals were used to give the green color most notable to the spirit. These chemicals, along with the alcohol and thujone, must have brought some sort of hallucinigenic state to its imbibers.

What are the pros and cons of drinking absinthe?

Absinthe is this herbal form of grain alcohol that was especially popular among artists in Europe around 1900. Many of the great painters of that time (Van Gogh, Renoir, etc) were said to have been regular drinkers of Absinthe. A modern version of this drink is available today, but I must admit Im a bit skeptical. Ive heard that Absinthe is very inspirational to artists and creative people, but Ive also heard that it causes brain damage of some kind. Any words of wisdom on this? Or better yet... Anyone care to share some of their personal experiences with Absinthe?
Answer: True story... last Christmas I had a room-mate. He was gay, and perhaps that had something to do with this... he obsessed on a Christmas tree and I let him decorate my entire home in a 'theme". It was "Carnation", I saw pink. I was cool. I never said a word.He went to a party and drank Absinthe and when he came home he started a fight with everyone who was in the house, grabbed his precious Barbie tree right out of the stand, and dragged it to the dumpster.... I think it has hallucinogenic properties. That b!tch was out of his mind!

Why is there a process to drinking absinthe?

Why does someone usually melt a sugar cube into the Absinthe? What effect does it have on the drinker or the drink itself? Thanks in advance.
Answer: In the case of Absinthe, part of the process is that it's part of the enjoyment of it. It's essentially the opposite of just doing shots to get hammered. The nature if Absinthe plays a part, too. By nature, it tends to be on the bitter side. This is why sugar became part of the ritual. However, some people enjoy the bitterness in the same way some beer fans enjoy a really bitter, hoppy beer. If it's not pre-sweetened, the people who enjoy the bitter will be happy and those who like sweet can add sugar to suit their taste. Finally, a lot of the essences and flavors are contained in the oils suspended in the alcohol...this is why Absinthe is generally very high strength (>65% usually). These oils are alcohol soluble but not water soluble. When you add water, you release the oils and essences and they no longer remain dissolved in the alcohol. This is where the milkiness or "louche" comes from. Louching your Absinthe not only brings it down to a drinkable strength, but the oils and essences are then released and the flavors and aromas develop more noticeably which leads to a more enjoyable drink. The problem is that if one were to leave it louched for an extended period of time, the essences would begin to deteriorate. They would also begin separating from the watered down alcohol and lead to further degradation of the drink. So, it's a combination of things. One is making a little bit of a ritual out of it...sort of like making tea versus a drinking a bottle of pre-made tea. The other is that it reduces the alcohol concentration so that it's actually drinkable as something enjoyable instead of a shot of really intense burn for the sake of getting sloshed. Sugar is optional according to taste. I like mine both with and without. Not having it pre-sweetened gives me the opton. Neither the sugar nor the water has any effect on the the drinker beyond what the Absinthe alone does. You'll also notice that there's no mention of fire or flames. Neither has any business around high proof alcohol (common sense reasons) nor does it have any positive effect on the drink. Fire is nothing more than bad Hollywood representation, stupid frat-house party tricks, and irresponsible Czech marketing.

can i bring absinthe into the US to drink for myself?

I want to bring Absinthe to drink formyself and my friends, can I do that or is there regulations? i thought putting it into a vodka bottle or something so it wont seem obvious at all
Answer: Maybe. That's about as sure as you can be...not because it's illegal (it's not, contrary to popular belief) but because customs doesn't know that it's not. They may seize it believing it to be illegal (and they don't have to prove themselves) and even if that's not the reason, they can use the rationale that it's not been taxed in the US...same as what they'd do if you had an undeclared bottle of Scotch while coming back from Scotland. People have been told that Absinthe is illegal for so long (1914 is when it started) that they've come to believe it. There's no law in the US that it's illegal. You'll actually notice that it's back on the shelves in liquor stores (the real stuff, not the faux Absinthes like "Absente" and "Herbsaint")...at least in limited release for now ("Lucid" is the currently available brand, but other microdistilleries are begining to get in on the action). Don't let the marketing of the Czech Absinthes (King of Spirits is among the worst) that say it's a drug, illegal, hallucinatory, or an aphrodisiac. Don't listen to hype about how much thujone makes a difference....it's all hype. The problem is that the customs agents at the airport hear the hype, too. Best o' luck to you bringing it back. Hopefully it's a good one so it's worth the effort. Worst case, if it's seized, you can get good Absinthe in the US...imported for now, but there's more on the way.

Is absinthe made from green devil absinthe kits as strong as the kind in Europe?

because my local liquor store is selling "legal" Absinthe that is weak from what I hear.
Answer: The Green Devil Absinthe kits contain a lot more wormwood, and therefore thujone, than European Absinthe. However, its not made quite the same way, so it tastes like butt. Also, despite the higher thujone content, all it did for me was taste bad and get me hammered drunk. No hallucinations, just blurred vision from being trashed.

What is the best absinthe commonly available in the United States?

From what Ive heard, the really good Absinthe is only available through mail order, but Ive recently noticed that there are a few types of Absinthe available at my liqour store. If anyone with some real knowledge of absynthe can recommend a brand thats available in the US (and hopefully not too hard to find) Id really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Answer: There are much more than just 4 available on shelves, with more to come each week. First of all, understand that there is (nor ever has been) any truth to the claim that Absinthe is a hallucinogen or that "good" Absinthe is high in thujone. That's just urban legend/myth/deceptive marketing. Currently available (off the top of my head, so I might have missed a couple) are Lucid, Kubler, St. George, Sirene, Leopold Bros., Mata Hari, Obsello, Le Tourment Verte, Taboo, Grand Absente (different from Absente), La Fee, La Muse, Pernod (the Absinthe, not the pastis), Clandestine La Bleue, and within a couple weeks, Marteau. The best? It's a matter of taste. It all depends on what you like. If you don't like anise, you won't like any of them. The easiest to find? Generally Lucid and Kubler are the easiest to track down. St. George is little by little becoming more widely available, and the rest are catching up. Almost all of them can be ordered on line through various suppliers (google Binny's or DrinkUpNY). So far, Kubler is the best "bang for your buck" in that it's a decent quality, it's sold as a full liter (as compared to 750 ml) and is among the lower priced (around $50-ish). Being one of the easiest to find helps, too. All of these are made in keeping with historic distilling techniques and recipes. There isn't any "thujone removal" process to "water it down" for US shelves. You'll also notice that they're all 50% alcohol or higher (mid 60s being most common) which, too, is just as it's been since the 19th century. Don't get suckered in by the "you won't trip balls without lots of thujone" line of garbage. You won't *with* lots of thujone, either...AND it will taste like utter pig vomit with all that has to be added to make the crappy ones "high thujone."

Does Absinthe affect the mind differently than other high proof drinks?

Some people say the active ingredient in the wormwood causes mind-altering effects. Other people say its the high alcohol content in Absinthe. I havent had Absinthe yet, but I want to when I have the chance.
Answer: I've own several bottles of the "Green Fairy" from different countries and it's okay in VERY small - moderate amounts (such as in lighter mixed drinks). Never drink it straight if it's your first time. Please. Absinthe is making a comback as the newest, coolest and hippest way to tie one on despite its licorice and pepper taste! St. George (a California Absinthe) and Lucid (also American made) top out at 126-proof. It used to be a concoction of wormwood, various herbs and ALOT of alcohol (which required it be dosed out in an elaborate preparation ritual involving water, spoons, sugar, etc.) -- but it was believed that Thujone - the major component of the distillate is what gives it the green color and is responsible for "absinthism" --- the signature "madness" caused by the drink. [Enhanced dreams, manic rage, incontinence, paralysis and dementia.] Some absithe can have as high as 140 proof alcohol so you can see where that school of thought that it's the alcohol and not the thujone is coming from. You'll enjoy it if you do it properly.

What effect does drinking absinthe have on you?

I drank Absinthe last night but not the real stuff it was just 45% from Tescos. The effect was unlike any other alcoholic drink Ive had; I went really sleepy and then I got really depressed and sobbed uncontrolably for a solid half an hour! I had horrible visions going through my head of stuff that had got me down through my life. This morning I have no hangover, no headache or anything! Usually I am violently sick the morning after drinking.
Answer: None watsoever except the alcoholic effect. It's a myth that Absinthe is or ever was hallucinogenic, as extensive tests on surviving 19th century bottles have proven again and again. Thujone, the infamous suposedly "hallucinogenic" substance is not under those concentrations. Furthermore, to become hallucinogenic you had to ingest an enourmous ammount, pounds, of wormwood. You would die of a blownup stomach or from it's toxicity before you saw pink elephants... Besides, in the process of distillation thujone almost disappears completely. Please enjoy Absinthe for what is is: An exquisite distillate, grape alcohol distilled with up to 9 different herbs, the main one is not even wormwood but green anis. In this very slow and complex distillation process (of up to 18 hours) all the subtle flavours of the herbs combine and produce a drink that is more complex in tasting than the very best of the red wines. THAT is why Absinthe is excellent, not because of it's FALSE hallucinogenic properties. And please be aware of what Absinthe IS NOT: - cheap vodka with wormwood leaves soaked in it, probably the origin of yet another myth, that Absinthe tastes terrible, no wonder, this sorry excuse for a beverage tastes horrible because wormwood contains one of the most bitter and foul tasting substances in Nature. Don't do this and don't frink this, it's not Absinthe. - "absinths" from the Czech Republic: nothing but cheap low grade alcohol artificially coloured and flavoured, dirt cheap to make, sold for a fortune mainly to americans that think they're buying the ultimate trip. Furthermore, these czech producers are the ones responsible for the perpetuation of the "hallucinogenic" myth, they sell more if they're able to maintain the "forbidden" aura... So, please, try and get a good french or escpecially swiss Absinthe and enjoy it always dilluted with water, no less than 2 parts of water to one of Absinthe. NEVER do that stupid gimmick of the burning sugar, you'll ruin all the subtle flavours, that is just a commerciall trick invented by the czechs in the 1990's, no one ever drank Absinthe that way in the 19th century. Cheers

my favourite Absinthe is jade edourad make also whats the best make do u tihnk is? how much is Absinthe to buy really?
Answer: The jades are great, so I have to agree with you. Everyone seems to love duplais (also available from www.Absintheonline.com) but I haven't had it yet. If we're talking about value for price, I think Kubler in the USA. You can buy it legally now, and it was a good Absinthe when it was only available from Europe, so now that it's like $50 in a liquor store (or online--http://www.drinkupny.com/category_s/86.htm) I'm all over it.
