How do I know if I have won an online Disney Sweepstakes?
I entered the disney epic mickey Sweepstakes online, and I want to know if I have won. The Sweepstakes just ended December 31.
Answer: Usually after a Sweepstakes it can take weeks or even months to verify all entries, delete duplicates, etc. Then once winners are chosen, it can take a while to contact each of them. If the Sweepstakes just ended on December 31st, I wouldn't expect that this whole process has happened yet. Give them a few more weeks. If you've won, Disney will contact you via phone or email, so keep an eye on those 2 things. If you never hear from them, you most likely did not win. They will provide a winners list to you though. Just go to the original contest page where you entered, and look in the rules. There should be an address you can write to in which you can request a winners list. By law, every Sweepstakes has to provide one to those who request it.

Can the sponsor of a sweepstakes or contest send the winner a 1099 greater than their actual costs?
Sweepstakes sponsors putting a sweepstake or contest on the internet often show an "ARV" (approximate retail value).
At the beginning of the following year, they send a Form 1099 to the winner to file with their taxes.
May the sponsor show a value on the Form 1099 greater than their actual costs of providing the prize?
Answer: Yes, they may. Assuming the prize is "new," the value of the prize should be the normal retail value of the prize. For example, if a person won a car that has a sticker price of $25,000, the 1099 must say $25,000 even if you could buy that car for $20,000 with discounts and haggling. The amount the contest people get the prize for makes no difference. They could pay a reduced rate, a wholesale price, or even get it for free (through sponsors or donations) but they still have to report the ARV on the 1099.

How would I conduct a legal sweepstakes for my small business in Texas?
Im considering doing a Sweepstakes to giveaway granite countertops and installation. Ive read that raffles are illegal. How would I go about running a legal Sweepstakes and advertising this event in Texas?
Answer: Are you currently advertisting? If you do, then include the submission form with your ad. The reason is the person who got the sweepstake might already have a counter top, so your gift might not be usable to them, unless it has cash value which I don't recommand. If you include submission in the ads, then you can collect customer information, to send them direct mail later on. Think about it. Try valpak, merchandiser or clipper magazine, there are ones who have lots home improvement ads inside.

Can teenagers be taxed on items or cash won from sweepstakes?
Im considering entering an online Sweepstakes, but I need to know if it is possible for me to be taxed for the item. If it helps, I am 15. Any answers about this will be greatly appreciated.
The Sweepstakes Im referring to have small prizes. Most of them probably are worth less than $100 and I dont have any other source of income right now.
Yes, I am eligible for the Sweepstakes I am referring to. These are intended for teens between the ages of 13 and 18.
Answer: From your information, you are a dependent. It is possible to be taxed on Sweepstakes winnings. The value of your prizes is considered "other income." If your total winnings are greater than $950, you are required to file a tax return and will owe income tax (but not Social Security or Medicare Tax). If you win prizes with value less than $950, you will not need to file a tax return and will not owe tax. In many cases, when a child is awarded a prize (especially something of significant value), the prize is considered awarded to the parent. Read the rules for your Sweepstakes to find out. Your parents are subject to different rules, but if you win a prize and the award is considered to be awarded to your parents, your parents will include the value of your prize on their tax return. A small prize with advertising information on it will not be considered to have any value for tax purposes (e.g. something with small value such as a t-shirt with advertising logo).

does Microsoft actually sponsor a sweepstakes based in London or is this a scam?
Ive received a few emails regarding my winning or entered in a Sweepstakes and that I need to reply for "award confirmation". Since most emails of this nature originate outside the U.S., I dont automatically respond for fear of identity theft or viruses.
Answer: This is a SCAM. If you click on the below link this site confirms various email scams hitting the internet and provides an online form for the reporting of all scams and frauds - (with links for your own country.) http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/lotteryscam_Yahoo2.php http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yoo2.phpahoo/... Unscrupulous thieves have sent you this email and they are trying to part you from your hard earned cash. They will often ask you to call a premium rate number and keep you holding on whilst you rack up a huge phone bill. They are then paid a large proportion of this phone bill. They may ask you to divulge personal information about yourself or ask for your bank or credit card details. Do not divulge any such information under any circumstances. It is surprising how many innocent victims have been duped by these types of emails. Please remember the thieves who send them are very clever and extremely convincing. I suggest you delete the email and send it into cyberspace where it belongs. Check out these sites for further information : http://www.scambusters.com http://www.hoax-slayer.com/

Why do Canadian sweepstakes winners have to answer an unaided, timed, mathmatical skill test question?
When reading the contest rules for various Sweepstakes entries, I have noticed that there is always a caveat that if the winner is Canadian they must answer a timed, unaided mathmatical skill test question in order to win the prize. Why is this? And, how difficult is the math question?
Answer: I actually run a Sweepstakes site at www.winanew.com, where you can win a: - 2008 Mini Cooper S Convertible - 46" Sony Bravia XBR HDTV - Microsoft Xbox, so am intimately familiar with the rules on raffles/Sweepstakes, etc... This is just a legal technicality in Canada... games of skill are allowed, so you have to answer the question correctly to win. FYI... the question can be as simple as you want it to be... like how much is 2+2.

I am holding a sweepstakes online and i have a legal question can you help?
I know that holding a Sweepstakes in the USA can be illegal, but what if i offered a "FREE" option on my Sweepstakes, would that be considered a legal online Sweepstakes? The only time the participants would pay is if they wanted to add more entries for prizes. Something like $1.00 for extra entries but FREE for your 1 entry.
PS> I am in Arizona if this matters at all.
Answer: No, that is still illegal. Anything in which a person can pay money to buy a chance to win is a Sweepstakes or lottery and that is illegal. Even if you are giving a free entry, the allowance of additional entries for money is against the law.

How do I have to report sweepstakes income if I sell the prize?
I won a prize back in August 2006 worth almost as much as a car (about $9000). I still have it, but have never used it, and was just waiting for winter to end so I could decide if I want to keep it or sell it. I already paid sales tax on it.
But, for income tax purposes, I am assuming I have to report the entire value as 2006 income. Thats fine, but what if I sell the item in 2007 for less than its worth (say $7500)???
Can I then declare my Sweepstakes income for 2006 as $7500, or do I have to report the whole thing? its going to be hard enough to pay federal + state income tax on an extra $7500 let alone the full $9000.
I finally received the prize in December, when I couldnt use it or sell it.
Im still waiting for a 1099, but since I know the exact value thats what I was expecting to have to claim on my taxes.
Answer: You have to report the fair market value of the prize in the year you won the prize. As long as you sell the prize for less than what you claimed it was worth when you won it, then there are no more additional taxes. If you sell it for more than $9000, then the difference is a captial gain.

What are the best websites for winning sweepstakes?
I have been on some websites for Sweepstakes had I have not won anything yet, and I have been on there for a while.I need websites that guaranty prizes.
Answer: One of my entertainments is trying to win Sweepstakes. Have no expectations of winning anything BIG. I collect the soda pop top codes and enter the codes online. This past month has been Mountain Dew Sweepstakes (going for a week more). I have won 2 sets of Green Tennis shoes, One hoodie jacket, 1 ball cap. I do not drink Mountain Dew. I get the pop tops by stopping along highway , looking in trash cans at gas station, looking in recycling boxes , and getting a few friends and relatives to save them for me. - - - -Coca Cola pop caps I collect . The Coca Cola program has been extended for another year. This past year I have gotten about 12 tee shirts that I have given to friends and family. Also won 100 bucks on a sprite back to school Sweepstakes of Coca cola. Last year got about 40 tee shirts and 5 Hoodie jackets from Pepsi contest. I do not win big , but i do have the fun of collecting the tops and winning something. Those green shoes look good on me. . - - - - - -Keep in mind the basic purpose of Sweepstakes is for the company to increase the sales by encouraging the consumer to buy more of their product. Strickly online Sweepstakes meets this requirement how ? Good luck !
